Cascais is now an active holiday port, but has been a fishing village since the Middle Ages. The contagious village began to become the humble supplier of fishing and agricultural activities of the capital Lisbon. In 1870, King Louis II of Cascais made his summer residence. During World War II, thanks to Portugal's neutral location and the beauty and elegance of the village, most European royal families came to settle or simply enjoy the sun and beaches. We can still see some of the beautiful mansions built by these nobles in Cascais, Estoril and the surrounding area. Many fortresses were built around the village and some of them still exist today, as well as the ancient influences, such as the flat and star-shaped plan, characteristic of the Renaissance.
Today, Cascais and its surroundings are one of the favorite places for both Portuguese and foreigners looking for a pleasant vacation. It is easy to get there from the capital by train or by car and on the other side; The village has a wide marina. For those who prefer to stay away from the big cities and take advantage of an equally urban and sophisticated environment, it is the way to go.
There are several sandy beaches, of which Guincho is the best known. The right weather, the right wind and the right sea conditions make Guincho the favorite place for lovers of surfing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing.
Due to the favourable conditions, Cascais has been the official host of the ISAF World Sailing Championship for dinghies and racing yachts in 2007 and the FIA F1 Portugal Grand Prix and Estoril Open.
Cascais offers challenging golf courses, surrounded by the beauty of nature and it is becoming a popular golf destination.
There is no reason to get bored because you can have fun with many things. You can visit the ruins of a castle, the sea and art museums, stroll through the streets and familiarize yourself with the typical Portuguese sidewalk, paved with the traditional "Calçada portuguesa". If you drive west by car, you will find "Boca do Inferno", a place where the power of the ocean is fantastic to look at, under a rock arch.
In Estoril you will find the largest casino in all of Europe. By visiting the casino, you will see how versatile it is and you will surely have a great experience. The casino has a beautiful panoramic view of its own gardens and has a fountain with a cyber multimedia water show at night. It also offers exciting shows, art exhibitions and dance and of course a large selection of around 1000 slot machines.
The gastronomy is also rich; There are plenty of restaurants that offer a good atmosphere, and some of them are the right place for fish and seafood lovers. Enjoy and experience delicious Portuguese wine as well.
