Hello, Welcome to my (*CONTENT HIDDEN*). I was born and raised in the West Indies. Because of my adult children who live in Netherlands and work and my four grandchildren I stay for much of the year in the Netherlands. In the winter I like to stay in my studio on Orient Beach in St. Maarten. I enjoy the sun, heat, sea, beach, water sports and the beautiful nature. I wish you a memorable holiday in this dream location. Sincerely, Yolanda Kuiperij.

"The Friendly Island", St Maarten / Saint Martin is special. For over 350 years, it consists of a French and a Dutch part. The local language is English. The French part of the capital Marigot has a Mediterranean character. Philipsburg is the capital of the Dutch side and is internationally oriented. Together with Sint Eustatius and Saba Sint Maarten is the Windward Islands. The island is 88 km2 of which the Dutch side in the south covers 34 km2. Most of Sint Maarten is hilly and green, with the highest point Pic Paradis (424 m). The island has beautiful bays with 37 magnificent beaches. Maho Bay is popular with plane spotters because of the spectacular landings. Simpson Bay and Maho Bay change after sunset in a sizzling. Do you want to take it easy, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy French cuisine at the French northern part. The entire island has excellent sports facilities such as diving, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, horse riding, tennis, mountain biking, and golfing (18 holes). By boat or plane, you can make a day trip to a surrounding island.
St. Maarten / St. MartinThe Friendly Island For over 350 years, the island of St. Maarten shared by two powers: the northern part is French and the southern part belongs to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Although there is no visible border, you can without any barrier between the two parts commute back and forth, the differences are large. The French side is truly "French": there is plenty of spoken French, the signage is French and the Euro is a fully accepted payment. That is the Dutch part very different: you have absolutely no notion of a part of the Netherlands to stay: English is spoken throughout virtually nothing is recognizable Netherlands and payment is done with dollars, although the Naf (Antillean Guilder) official currency. Here and there Euros accepted, but that's just watch out, because often a very unfavorable exchange rate used. The notable differences, which are so characteristic of this relatively small island, are concisely summarized by the residents of St. Maarten in the slogan: "Twice the Vacation Twice the Fun.". So double the fun! St. Maarten is a tourist attraction. More than half a million tourists flock to this beautiful island annually. A tour of the green slopes with many, truly breathtaking views is an experience in itself. The French side are also beautiful bays with sandy beaches, often surprisingly nice restaurants and bars are. Lovers of nightlife and have a flutter on the Dutch section are: in Philipsburg are plenty of nightlife, (duty free) shops, restaurants and casinos.
The cultural diversity of St. Maarten has its origins in the historical role of the island as a connection place for visitors to the 'New World'. Dutch, French and English traders brought European traditions, while the Africans the language and culture of West Africa brought. Nowadays can be found in the many languages ??spoken, as well as in the different nationalities. Various influences The most important cultural event is the annual carnival with parades, calypso competitions, reggae shows, and an endless row of booths serving traditional food aanbieden.Guavaberry is the legendary folk liqueur of Sint Maarten / St. Martin. It was first made hundreds of years ago in the family circle. It is fueled by rum, cane sugar and wild St. Maarten Guavaberries. On the mountains in the middle of the island are the rare fruit found. The liquor has become a part of the local culture. It is a valued symbol of earlier times.
As a result of constant landslides and volcanic activity, St. Maarten consists of several layers and many hills. Pic Paradis, the highest point of the island and is 424 meters. There are many bays and coves along the coast of the island with a combination of salt and fresh water. One of the largest lagoons in the Caribbean is the Simpson Bay Lagoon, which is on the west side of the island ligt.St. Maarten has many unique species of plants such as Yellow and Orange Sage, and the Flamboyant Hibiscus. There are also many species of palm trees and cacti. Even birds such as yellow breasts, pelicans and tropical birds can all be found on the island. The Caribbean Sea is home to an incredible diversity of marine life. St. Maarten is surrounded with coral reef, where you can. A variety of underwater flora and fauna found Large schools are found in the recesses and caves of the reef fish. Other inhabitants of the reef are the star fish, the Caribbean 'Vertebrate Cancer', the 'Queen Conch' and 'Queen Angelfish', which is easily recognizable by its purple and yellow kleuren.Er are also several species of turtles can be found, such as the Hawksbill, Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles. They can be seen in the southern and eastern part of the island.
St. Maarten / St. Martin is one of the few tax-free destinations in the Caribbean. Front Street in Philipsburg is an international shopping. Also there Maho, whose evening is open 11 hours, Simpson Bay and Marigot, with designer shops and unique boutiques along the ports. Items such as jewelry, watches, sunglasses, perfume and cigars are many tens of percents cheaper here. Genuine Cuban cigars are sold by more than 20 authorized stores. Leather bags and accessories are also very good purchases as well which are much cheaper than in Europe.
Sint Maarten is surrounded by some 37 beaches, which are all different. The crystal clear, turquoise, warm waters of the Caribbean Sea makes for a fantastic tropical feel. There are private beaches and small coves that are only accessible by boat, but there are also beaches that are known for their popular beach bars. On the beach of Orient Bay is wearing clothes also optional. Moreover, the many reefs the snorkelers and divers the opportunity to see. Many tropical fish
Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side of St. Maarten, was founded in 1763 by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch service. The city is, as it were sandwiched between the sea on one side of The Great Bay and across the water of a shallow lake that used to play a role in the salt. Actually, the city consists of only two on the sea parallel highways, streets and alleys that connect both ways with each other and access to the beach at The Great Bay. This beach is a nice, big and safe "city beach". The two main streets listening to the name "Front Street" and "Back Street" respectively. Front Street is the street of the many (luxury) tax-free stores, shops and boutiques. There is sale of all: Italian (brand) leather goods, cameras, watches, jewelery, (Cuban) cigars, liquor etc.. Backstreet however, is more the street from the cheap clothing stores and ditto (Chinese) restaurants. The most striking building of Philipsburg is undoubtedly the "Courthouse". The white-painted wooden building with a tower was built in 1793 and is located in Front Street. It serves as the courthouse for Dutch St. Maarten. Also in the Front Street is the St. Maarten Museum. This museum is free. On the basis of the collection, an overview of the history and culture of the eiland.Van the original two forts that St. Maarten had to offer protection are only the ruins remain. Fort Amsterdam is the oldest fort and was built in 1631, Fort William, which originally bore the name "Fort Trigge", was built by the English in 1801 and transferred to the Nederlanders.Philipsburg in 1816 is a vibrant city with great regularity huge cruise ships dock and the tourist has a lot to offer: numerous restaurants, bars, shops, beautiful beaches, hotels, (all-inclusive) resorts, casinos etcetera.
It will take some getting used to the idea that such a relatively small island is divided in two and therefore has two capitals. Marigot is the capital of St. Martin, the French side of the island. "Wetlands" is the original meaning of "Marigot" and wetlands has also been in earlier times. Once you drive Marigot you immediately recognize the French influence: It is said that no other place throughout the Caribbean is as French as Marigot. You see the signs that a copy of the signage in France itself. You see and hear all kinds of other expressions: the advertising is French and if you put your ear to listen well you hardly hear other than French. However, that does not mean that you could not with Engels. In Marigot are many shops with typical French style of the "boutique". Manage well The most luxurious shopping center is close to the sea in the relatively new "Marina Port la Royale" complex. But there is more: for example, the open-air markets on Saturday and Wednesday mornings with an abundance of clothing, fresh vegetables, fruit and fish. Or the many restaurants and bistros, art galleries, the museum "On the Trail of The Arawaks", that the history and culture of French St. Martin not only cherish but is also visible. Like Philipsburg Marigot has a limited street pattern: only four main streets that run parallel to the coast with the advantage of a tour of Marigot takes little effort. And of course a visit to the imposing, beautifully restored Fort Louis a must. The fort is the largest and most important historical building of St. Martin. It was built in 1767 by order of the French king Louis XVI. The steep climb to the fort is richly rewarded with a fantastic view of the sea and the surrounding area.
