Additional information

Minerve lies in the Hérault where the rivers Briant and Cesse meet. The village has a dramatic history. The landscape here is rugged with high altitude differences. Minerve lies on a rock between two flasks that have been carved by the rivers for millions of years, giving it a spectacular view. This village is definitely worth a visit!
Carcassonne, Occitan: Carcassona, is a fortified city in France. It is located in the Occitanie region 90 km southeast of Toulouse, roughly between the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. The city lies on both sides of the river Aude and the Canal du Midi goes through the city. The city has an important regional market function due to its central location. The most important employers are the government, services sector, retail trade and tourism. Carcassonne railway station is located in the municipality. It is the largest tourist attraction in France after Paris and Mont-Saint-Michel. The most famous landmark is the fully restored fortified old town, La Cité de Carcassonne. This Ville fortifiée historique de Carcassonne has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. [1] It is the best example of a medieval city in Europe, which is almost completely preserved, and the largest preserved fortress from the Middle Ages. The actual city center, where the town hall is located, is the Ville Basse, the lower town, or Bastide St. Louis. It was built in the 13th century as a refuge for residents of the neighborhoods that used to be built around the Cité and which were completely demolished. Two bridges over the Aude connect the old Cité and the new city, called the Pont Vieux and the Pont Marengo.
Canal du Midi World Heritage Culture Canal du Midi 02.jpg Country Flag of France France UNESCO region Europe and North America Criteria i, ii, iv, vi Inscription Course UNESCO-no. 770 Registration 1996 (20th session) CanalDuMidi map.jpg UNESCO World Heritage List The Canal du Midi (Literally: Canal of the South) is a 250 km long canal through France between Toulouse and the Mediterranean Sea. It runs through the Occitanie region. The canal starts in the channeled Garonne (Canal de Garonne) near Toulouse and ends at the Étang de Thau near the fishing village of Sète. Near Sallèles-d'Aude, a short branch of the canal was dug to the Aude, and from there the Canal de la Robine to Narbonne and Port-la-Nouvelle on the Mediterranean. History The Romans and Leonardo Da Vinci had already conceived an idea for a canal through France, but the same problem always arose: overcoming the ridge in the dry Languedoc province. In the seventeenth century the pressure increased to avoid the one-month and two thousand-kilometer detour around the hostile Spain. The canal was eventually constructed by Pierre-Paul Riquet and the Italian François Andréossy in the period 1667-1680. The waterway was fed in the Languedoc region by a 30 km long feeding channel. The Lac de Saint-Ferréol was also constructed, the largest reservoir of that time. The canal has many other artworks, such as stair locks, aqueducts, a tunnel, etc. That is why it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. Famous are the aqueduct or "pont-canal" at Béziers, which spans the Orb, the stairways of Fonserannes (9 locks) and Castelnaudary (4 locks) and the round lock at Agde that also connects the canal to the Hérault.
Beaufort In Beaufort in the post office you can buy fresh bread and croissants every day. The restaurant, located in the old village school, is a must and is for most villas within walking distance, about 500 m walk, The terrace is under the trees and in the summer there is a special evening organized. Furthermore you will find in the village a "Chateau" from the 12th century. This Chateau towers high above the village. In the "chateau part" with its narrow streets are still inhabited houses, partially restored. In one of the towers is a chapel that still serves. Olonzac is about 2 km away where you can go for daily groceries. Every Tuesday morning there is a nice market and you can enjoy a cup of coffee at Café de la Poste. There are a butcher's shop / caterer, newspaper stand, restaurants and various bakeries.
