Location & area recommendations

Additional information

In summer this is a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts. You can surf, sail, water ski, fish, canoe, swim or sunbathe on the shore. You can read more about this under the 'the lake' button.

On the rivers L'Ubaye and Durance you can practice wind water sports, such as rafting, whitewater swimming and kayaking. The Durance river flows through the Parc Naturel Régional du Queyras towards Embrun, where it flows into the Lac de Serre-Ponçon.

The wildly flowing river offers excellent opportunities for kayaking and rafting and, in the higher area in the Queyras, also canyoning. Fishermen get their money's worth here and fly fishermen can also indulge themselves (or fish). Mountain trips are also organized for fishermen.
In winter, ski areas within a half-hour drive offer opportunities for skiing, tobogganing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. You can stay here until the end of April. The snow-sure ski resorts of Pra-Loup and Sauze Super-Sauze near Barcelonette are being visited by more and more Dutch people. Many smaller ski paradises such as Saint-Jean Monclar, Les Orres, Réallon, Risoul, where you can also ski very well with children, are also reachable within 30 minutes. Other winter sports activities such as ski school, tobogganing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding are possible.
From a plateau in the village of St Vincent les Forts, a 20-minute drive from our home, paragliders take a leap from the mountain every day... This is clearly visible from our home, but it is certainly worth a visit up close. For those who have the courage: through Jennifair you can take a course to get your pilot's license.
A car ride through the Hautes Alpes is definitely worth it. The tourist office has described five thematic routes that will certainly appeal to the curious tourist: the fruit and wine route, the lavender route, the Napoleon route, the high Alpine route and the sundial route.
In the Muséoscope du Lac you will get a good idea of the origins of the lake and what preceded it. The museum is located on the north side of the dam and offers a beautiful view of the lake, the dam and the Durance. Le Sauze du Lac is also clearly visible from this point, on the other side of the lake. A one-hour guided tour takes you past models of the old villages that had to make way for the reservoir. In two cinema halls you can see films (Dutch commentary through headphones) about the situation before the construction of the lake, interviews with residents and a documentary about the construction of the dam. Finally, in the multimedia show you will experience how the valley floods and the villages disappear under water.

Open: from April to October, in high season there are guided tours every day.
For avid mountain bikers (VTT in French) there is some climbing to do around the Lac de Serre Poncon.

The “Tour du Lac” is a 120 kilometer route for real climbers, alternating passes and small roads at high altitude around the lake. A true mirror of the surrounding mountains, Serre-Ponçon offers fantastic panoramas and exceptional landscapes during this high-altitude circuit.

You can go downhill in the well-known ski areas. With the chairlift up and down with the down-hill mountain bike, for the real daredevils!
This paradise for flora and fauna is visited by 600,000 people every year. The Park is located between Gap and Briancon and can be reached from Embrun via Réallon or Châteauroux les Alpes. The park has a rich flora, with 1800 plant species of which 40 are rare or endangered species, and a fauna with 210 species of birds, including eagles and 110 other animal species.

The park covers approximately 180,000 hectares and has created trails with a total length of 740 km. It is not permitted to visit the park with a vehicle. So explore on foot through alpine meadows and forests, past waterfalls, lakes and glaciers with eternal snow. Given the size of the park, one day will certainly not be enough. The altitude of the park is between 800 and 4100m, with the highest point being La Barre des Ecrins.
The permanent exhibition of the Maison de Energies at the foot of the barrage shows how a power plant works. Interactive models and multimedia presentations also provide a picture of the history and origins of the dam. A film shows the activities of the French energy company and the role that water plays in this.
