The Feiels house in the Eifel is a former farm from around 1760, which has been converted into a comfortable home while retaining original details. It is located at an altitude of almost 500 meters in the center of the small village of Feuerscheid, near Bitburg and Prüm, about a three-hour drive from Utrecht.
The house can accommodate up to six people.
Because the original part of the farm is so old, the ceilings in some rooms are low.
Pets are not allowed.
On the ground floor you will find the living room, reading room and dining room. These are in open connection with each other. There is a difference in level between the living room and the reading room.
From the living room you have a beautiful view over the garden, the valley and the wooded mountains on the other side of the valley. In the morning, when the fog slowly lifts, you see a picture as if it were an advertisement for Spawater. The living room has a two-seater sofa and a seating area with two chairs.
Around 1960, an assisted living home was built next to the house. We added this to the living room in 2012. In this area there is a three-seater sofa and a well-stocked bookcase. The small TV (with DVD and Chromecast) can be seen from both rooms. Movies and series are available. And CDs for the radio/CD player.
In the dining room (the former kitchen), the original sink is still present, as is the bread oven, where 12 loaves of bread were baked every week until 60 years ago. There is a more than 100-year-old oak dining table with four chairs, as well as an antique chair for a fifth diner. If necessary, a stool can be added for a sixth person. A beautiful pharmacy cabinet has been placed in this room where luxury tableware, tablecloths and placemats can be found. The 'daily use' crockery is in the kitchen.
The walls of the house are, like French houses, 60 cm thick and they are not straight anywhere. The wide window sills add atmosphere to the house. In the summer it remains nice and cool downstairs.
The farm was built in the so-called Trierer Langhaus style. The outbuildings are attached to the house and are accessible from the inside. The kitchen, bathroom and laundry room/workshop were built in the former forge. We store garden tools at the pigsty behind it. Wood is stored in the dars.
The kitchen is spacious and light and also offers a beautiful view of the garden. Cooking is electric, there is an oven, a dishwasher and a small refrigerator with freezer drawers. Pans, cutlery and crockery are generously provided. There are also cookbooks.
The bathroom with walk-in shower, sink and toilet is on the ground floor. There is a non-slip floor in the shower area. The bathroom is heated by a radiator and underfloor heating. On the first floor there is a second toilet and a sink.
The bedrooms are located on the 1st and 2nd floors of the house and are divided into a double and a single bedroom on the 1st floor and a triple bedroom on the 2nd floor. The single bedroom is especially suitable for a child. On the first floor the ceiling is 1.95 m high. The large attic room is simply nice and high. A toddler folding bed is available, but the house is not really geared up for little ones. There are no stair gates and the garden is not completely fenced. The walls in the house are susceptible to damage, just like some old cupboards.
The house has central heating. However, you will not find any radiators in the living room. We didn't think that fit in a house with so much history. The walls are equipped with wall heating in clay. This has the advantage that you don't have to heat as much. And if you arrive in winter, once the thermostat is turned up, you will soon be exposed to radiation coming from the wall.
So much for the house. The garden, mainly grassland with trees, slopes downwards. Our house is located on top of the hill of Feuerscheid. There is a paved terrace along the house. There are several seating areas, partly covered. We have omitted playground equipment. There is a nice playground 300 meters from our house.
There are no shops in Feuerscheid. You can do your shopping in Waxweiler, Schönecken, Bitburg or Prüm. You can reach these places in 10 to 15 minutes. Please note, shops in Germany are still closed on Sundays, with the exception of a few bakeries. And the supermarket in Schönecken closes at 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Also good to know: Smaller stores often lack an ATM machine.
Luxembourg, Echternach, Vianden, Trier and the Moselle region with its many wine villages are not far away. There are plenty of hiking opportunities and the Volcanic Eifel with the famous Maaren is definitely worth a visit.
There has been WIFI in the house since 2020.
Rental is for a minimum of three nights. This may differ during school holidays. If in doubt, ask us.
