Tuoro is a small town located on the border of Tuscany and Umbria, on the north side of Lake Trasimeno. It has only 4000 inhabitants. On the territory of this town, in the year 217 BC. the historic battle between Hannibal and the Roman armies. The battle ended with a bloody defeat for the Roman legions. The hamlet of Sanguineto refers to the blood that flowed then (Latin, sanguis=blood). You can take an archaeological walk through the entire battlefield. Some of the crematoria (ustina) can be visited. There is also a small museum dedicated to the battle.
Tuoro sul Trasimeno once belonged to the Papal States, who set up a customs office there. This place is still called La Dogana.
The inhabitants of Umbria are also known as 'gente accogliente', people who are open to others.
Tuoro is ideally suited as a starting point for numerous excursions in many areas. For art and culture you can visit the historic cities of Umbria and Tuscany, eg Cortona, 'world famous' especially among Americans, through the book by Frances Mayes: House in Tuscany, is about 20 minutes by car.
Perugia, known for its chocolate ......... and where the high-lying historic old center can be comfortably reached by the built escalators, is about 30 minutes by car.
Assisi, fantastic city, completely dedicated to St. Franziskus and his female counterpart, St. Klara, is about 35 minutes by car.
And then in a slightly larger radius there are countless larger and smaller highlights, too many to mention, such as: Orvieto, Gubbio, Montepulciano, Spoleto, Firenze, Rome, Lucca and Pisa.
But with Tuoro as a starting point, there are also wonderful walks in the hills and bike rides, eg around the lake.
The special atmosphere on the Campo del Sole makes it a good place to relax on one of the terraces of the various restaurants.
Also here is the pier, where the boats moor, with which you can visit the islands in the lake, including Isola Maggiore and Isola Minore.
However, Tuoro also has a higher, old historic center, with a square, a beautiful fountain and of course a bar.....
where the Italian walks in at any time of the day to drink his espresso or cappuccino, preferably 'al bar'......
