Castello55

This beautiful medieval house is positioned on a mountaintop in the Little Apennines, between Parma and La Spezia. It has been renovated to a high standard holiday home. At various places in the house the medieval details are preserved.

The house is situated along the famous pilgrimage route to Rome, the Via Francigena. It was part of the castle that stood on top of the mountain, wich onfortunately has been lost. The house served as a tollhouse. Because the path along the front of the house is too narrow for large groups of walkers, the pilgrimage route has been redirected dozens of meters. The house lies in a small hamlet at the old church with bell tower of Valdena, surrounded by chestnut trees and forests where you can find edible mushrooms, deer, wild boars, foxes and badgers may encounter. An information board at the church gives you more information.

The living area of the house rests on two cellars. One of these caves has a spiral staircase to the upstairs living room and is used as a utility room and storage. Here are the boiler, the meter, the main valve of the water, a washing machine and a tumble dryer. The other basement serves as a foundation for the large terrace and is currently used for wood storage.
On the ground floor is a living room with fireplace that is in open communication with the former stable, which was transformed into a kitchen and dining area. From the living room there are two doors trough wich you can reach the large sun terrace with outdoor bath at the front and the shaded terrace in the orchard. From both terraces you can enjoy the peace and nature. In the living room is a staircase that brings you upstairs, to a landing, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

The nearby town of Borgo val di Taro is an authentic Italian town with many restaurants, bars, supermarkets, shops and the weekly market on Monday.

From the house you can make beautiful walks or bike rides through the countryside.
By car or by train from Borgo val di Taro, you can visit the beautiful Tuscan towns or cities like Pisa, Luca, Florance or the cities in Emila Romagna, Parma Fidenza (outlet villago), Bologna etc., or those in Liguria, La Spezia, Genua etc.

Take the train in Borgotaro at 8:45 am to Monterosso, get off on the beach of the beautiful Chinque Terre and you can join the famous walk "the Via Dela More" a walk along the five villages on the coast of Liguria. From there you can also take the fery to the other villages or just enjoy the beach and sea.

You can swim in the river Taro or in the large community pool.

Additional information

Valdena owes its history to its location at the foot of the pass Bratello. This pass connects the valleys of the rivers Taro and Ceno the Tuscan region. In his research, "xxxvi-xxxvii, anno xxxiv.xxxv-2006-2007 le vie di comunicazione tra la la pianura padana e lunigiana, dall'antichita 'al medioevo: un sistema possibile difensivo bizantino sul deposit allo / Brattello" makes Sandro Santini reported the fact that the Romans already used the pass. In Valdena are relics found this Roman road. In a document of 744 by Lucam, which led to the Abbey of Val Noveglia Gravago according Sandini already spoken about the powerful family Platoni, gentlemen of Torresana at the foot of the Bratello in (H) Ena, a castle built near the Byzantine fortress Turris. To where the castle stood exactly is never made official investigation, but the residents have the (overgrown) fundamentals can be found on the ridge of Località Castello.
Through marriages Platoni were related accustomed to the powerful family Male Spina (Compiano). During quarrels between the families that dominated the valleys, the Malaspina and Piacentini (Piacenza) Castle (H) Ena was destroyed and the area was owned by the city of Piacenza. The families Male Spina and Platoni were forced to sell to the Piacentini their rights.
After numerous wars and negotiations (the monastery of Bobbio in the fundamental requirement) received the Platoni brothers gentlemen (H) Ena, Guiffredo, William and Hugh, sons of Armano Platoni their rights back, however, with the prohibition of the Castle (H) to rebuild. Ena The Piacentini built a new building in the place where now Borgotaro, Turrexana, Castro et bourg "and were thus the founders of the town of Borgo val di Taro.
In the Middle Ages, people from the North went to Rome. Pilgrims Roads were otherwise no fixed paths as sometimes thought. Pilgrims went on their trips through churches and monastery to monastery for shelter and food. In the area of ??the valleys of the rivers Taro and Ceno many churches and monasteries were housed. The old Roman roads, which were already used to their conquests, by the Lombards and the Franks were the Pilgrims until their goal to achieve. Rome, Already in 900 speaks the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sigeric on the pilgrimage route of Via Francigena (= Franken). Through the mountain pass Bratello the Pilgrims arrived in Tuscany.
