Townhouse

La Maison du Bouchonnier

In the Lot-et-Garonne in the former province of Gascony, the house of the former cork manufacturer is located in the center of a medieval town with shops, 3 restaurants and 4 cafés.
Hence the name La maison du bouchonnier.

The house has fiber optic and WIFI via a router ideal for working from home and a connected TV. There is a heated swimming pool with sunbathing lawn within walking distance. I have done everything I can to give you a feeling of being at home in France. The house can accommodate 2, 3, 4 adults, or a family with 2 to 4 children. The house is the ideal starting point to discover the region without having to travel great distances.

The house with its thick stone walls is naturally cool and is comfortably furnished. At the end of your stay, the cleaning lady will come to prepare the house for the next guests so that you can enjoy your holiday until the last minute.
The terrace with covered area and dining table is on the same floor as the house. The garden is located a few steps higher. The property is completely walled, so completely safe for children and pets.
Despite the summer activity, the house and garden are an oasis of peace.
I rent a private parking space for my guests 150 m from the house.

There is a folder in the house with printed walking routes, some of which can be started from the front door.
Mézin is a pleasantly busy town, especially in the summer, and all sorts of things are organized in the surrounding area. There is always something to do somewhere and you don't have to drive many kilometers for it. Shopping can be done on foot at the Sunday morning market and in the shops that are also open on Sunday mornings.
From April to November it is usually summery weather, generally less warm than in the south-east and center of France, until November 1 it is often 25 degrees and dry. The location south of Bordeaux and north of Toulouse is very favorable, which was the deciding factor in our decision to purchase. The hours of sunshine per year are comparable to those around the Mediterranean.
Mézin had a rich cork exploitation, which the cork museum still bears witness to. Mézin is located in the Armagnac region and in the region; les Côtes de Gascogne, a sparkling wine is also produced white and rosé.
Golf courses in the area and also fishing opportunities in the river 1 km from the house where carp are also caught, a fishing card is required and available from a shopkeeper at the market place.

Mézin is located on the cycle route that connects Scandinavia with Southern Europe. Electric bicycles can be rented in Mézin and also in a village 10 km away and can be delivered to your home. A group cycling tour with this English/French-speaking rental company is also possible.

Mézin has 3 restaurants and also 1 butcher/caterers where you can get delicious ready-made meals or pizza at one of the restaurants, although you can prepare good meals yourself in the comfortable kitchen. The Sunday morning market is very pleasant and well supplied with fruit, vegetables, cheese, exotic dishes, roast chicken, snails, oysters. Mézin is located in the middle of the production areas of all these goodies. Every wine estate has a tasting room and more and more events are being organized such as picnics on the estate, music and meal: dimanche au vignoble. A petit déjeuner Gascon is regularly organized at the Magnaut wine estate and I think more and more will be organized. Mézin has the Cave des Côtes de Gascogne and Armagnac du Mézinais with a tasting room where regional products can also be found.

Final cleaning: Included. I take the bed linen to the laundry in Mézin. The towels are washed on site and dried in the machine. The washing machine and dryer that you can use are in the boiler room adjacent to your kitchen.
Arrival time from 4 p.m. You may arrive later, but preferably not earlier or give a signal when you are on your way.
Departure time is 10:30 am, when the cleaning lady and gardener arrive.
I am present to receive you, I live in the adjacent house, which is separated from the holiday home by thick stone walls, so you have complete privacy, but you can always call on me for advice and tips. In the bookcase you can find all information about the area, sporting and cultural activities, vineyards, restaurants, in short, everything the region has to offer. And on Sunday mornings I keep the Office de Tourisme open so that you can also walk in for documentation.

I have lived in France since 1973 and since 2001 here in Mézin with its pleasant climate and friendly people. I know this area, French Tuscany, very well.
The former cork factory separated by thick walls from the holiday home is my permanent home. There is no license number with the advertisement, which is not necessary here in Mézin.

Additional information

Mézin is located in the Lot-et-Garonne. A beautiful green area south of the Dordogne with a varied landscape with rolling vineyards and sunflower fields.
The highway and the railway station at Agen 37km of Mézin.
The region has a pleasant climate and the winter lasts never lang. Spring and Autumn the temperature averages 24 degrees.
The summers are warm and cozy and the locals friendly and welcoming.
The Lot-et-Garonne has not yet been discovered by the big tourisme. If you like, pure nature and a rich past, appreciate your privacy, and you like holidaying in a French atmosphere the cottage "La maison du bouchonnier" (the cork manufacturers'house)is exactly what you need.
Mézin is a medieval town that has already started to develop at the end of the 11th century. As witnesses to the church and the market with its arcades and narrow streets.
Late 19th century, Mézin flourished by the local gold: the cork from the cork oak. The cork museum illustrates the history of the time that Mézin was the capital of the cork industry, the large stone houses are a relic from that aera. Le bouchonnier (cork manufacturer) was born in 1850, he was also a time of Mézin mayor, his former home with its stately front door and staircase, the spacious terrace and romantic walled garden, now is the holiday house. Hence the name La maison du bouchonnier.
The bakers, butchers, grocery and pharmacy, Thursday and Sunday market are nearby within walking distance (150m). Get up in the morning and immediately you can go to the bakery buy your baguette and croisants for breakfast in the garden that is the start of life as a Frenchman. The restaurants are located 150m from the house, like the swimming pool and the Tourist Office.

Even if you under my English name, Mary Grahame, suggest something else, I was born and raised in Sluis, Zeeland near the Belgium border, but just in the Netherlands.
I live now almost 40 years in France. The former cork factory is my permanent home and adjacent to La maison du bouchonnier so that I can, if you appreciate, can advice and provide ideas. But also in the house you will find documentation about what is going to do in many areas. I'm volunteer at the local office de tourisme so that no event can miss me so that I can keep guests informed of what is organized,
Mezin is located in the Lot-et-Garonne but also borders the Gers and the Landes. There are plenty of walking routes, around the town there is a walking route starting from the front door. In the documentation cabinet there is a folder with printed walking routes, but there are also QR codes for those who find it more convenient. Such a printed walking route can be taken out of the folder to take with you on a route and after returning home, if any have been lost, please report them so that I can replace them via the rando site. Mezin has an outdoor swimming pool, with a shady sunbathing area and a lifeguard. A paddling pool is also included. The opening time from Tuesday to Sunday from 2 to 8 pm. Next to the swimming pool is a freely accessible fenced playground for the little ones. There is a Petanque club (jeu de boules) in Mezin that you can join, but that is not mandatory for a game of jeu de boules, there are 2 sets in the gite. Canoeing is also possible in Mézin and Lavardac. Nerac at 12 km has a swimming amusement park: Ludopark with slides. A boat trip can be made on the river that flows through Nerac, but also through Condom in both places. In the center of Nérac along the river is a good ice cream parlor and a cozy terrace. Henry IV's castle in Nerac can be visited. A walk through the parc La Garenne dating from the time of Henri IV is also worthwhile, possibly with the aim of a consumption in the Chalet at the end of the parc, a walk of 2 km I estimate. We also have thermal stations 30 km from the house where it is also possible to swim, relax, sauna or massage. Mezin has a beauty salon and hairdressers if you like something like that I can schedule an appointment. In the region there are lakes for natural swimming at 30 km from the house. The above is just a small sample of what there is to experience and do, there is also much to see and taste in Mezin and the surrounding area, there is so much to do that even 2 weeks leaves room for a next time. Usually the first trip of my guests is on Sunday afternoon to the beautiful village of Fources, 5 km from Mézin, where there is always something to do and in any case visit and taste because it is very beautiful and typical and there are 2 restaurants. The house has a documentation cabinet with folders by theme, there is so much to do, to see, to experience, to taste. Sunday morning is the market in Mézin and I take advantage of that to keep the Office de tourisme open and to make suggestions and provide documentation to the tourists. The office is between the 2 cafes with terrace.
Mézin The town lies in the vineyards of the Coteaux du Mezinais (Côtes de Gascogne) and Armagnac. Mézin also has a "cave" where the local wine, Armagnac and Floc du Ténarèze sold worden.De cave also sells to local producers, asparagus, strawberries, kiwi, melons delightful as the harvest time. Many wine chateaux are open for visits and tests and I now have some good addresses collected. 100m around the corner from La Maison du bouchonnier is the restaurant "Le Relais de Gascogne" where at noon daily menu with wine for only 11 Euros served on the terrace or in the cozy living room-like restaurant. In the periphery restaurants I know I can beat you because I like to try it myself first before I recommend them to my guests. In the marketplace are 2 cafe-restaurants / Pizeria also offer WiFi on their terrace so you can check your mails. Cafe du Commerce also organizes concerts of which some artists with a certain reputation. In the town there are 2 restaurants. The shops and 4bakkers, 2slagers a caterer / charcutier for takeaway, the pharmacy are also open on Sunday morning that is also the market day that all the atmosphere already worth is.Maandags there is a chance that shops are closed but a baker and 1 of 2 caterers / charcutiers are also open on Monday morning, the pharmacy is 6.5 / 7 days open. The larger super-marchés Intermarché and Super U are open Monday to Saturday, respectively in Nerac and Lavardac. In Nerac is a big market day on Saturday.
Mézin is one of the routes to St Jacques de Compostella, limit of the Lot et Garonne, Gers south / south-east to the hills of Armagnac and the forests of the Landes to the west / north-west. The area is also called the Tuscany of France and is popular with artists. The summers are sunny. September, October and even November with beautiful fall colors we enjoy a wonderful Indian summer we Ete If the call even in december there is much chance of a mild climate. Real winter is usually in January and February. Ask for a longer stay from september to the special rate. The house has central heating and a fireplace. After mid novembre there are festivities for example La Flamme d'Armagnac, then the flame at the Armagnac-firing created that is celebrated with a meal and be treated to warm Armagnac. In this gastronomic area, there is always an excuse to celebrate! The mushrooms, foie gras, confit Les, with the wine of the vintage les Coteaux du Mezinais, as le Buzet.De region has a great cultural wealth. The house lends itself as a starting tour for interesting day trips such as to Lourdes, Pau, the Atlantic coast or Bordeaux, Toulouse, Bergerac or interesting trips near home.
Mézin in Autumn Winter and spring and enjoy for a very reasonable low rate of tranquility, the beautiful surroundings of the beautiful autumn's rich history, read a book by the fireplace or still on the terrace and garden. Enjoying wine and Armagnac with many castles or domains can be tasted and / or for purchase.
