Fun facts

  • The ‘St. Jacques de Compostelle’ pilgrimage route skirts the hamlet of Pradels. It forms part of the famous pilgrimage trail to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
  • Many villages in this area are so beautiful that they merit inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage listing. Conques, Espalion and Estaing are three of them.
  • The ancient name for Aveyron is ‘Rouergue’, a reference to the area’s red-coloured earth.
  • Aveyron is a major cheese producer. Varieties include the Tomes, the Pérails and the ‘king of cheeses, Roquefort. This is made with raw sheep’s milk and matured in the natural caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon.
