This park is a karst mountainous plateau in the western part of the Slovak Ore Mountains on the border between Central Slovakia and Eastern Slovakia. The national park covers an area of ??20 318 ha. and a buffer zone of 21,698 ha. The park is located in three districts, Brezno, Revuca and Rimavská Sobota. The core of the karst area formed by a limestone - dolomite plateau with numerous karst forms. The highest mountain is Fabová hola (1439 m) and the lowest point, the valley of the Muránky stream (400 m above sea level). The total length of the karst area from Cervená skala to the western border near Tisovec is about 25 km. In this area more than 150 noteworthy inaccessible to the caves, more than 50 underground lakes and rivers, and large amounts of karst formations on the ground such as ditches, karst holes, gorges, canyons, rock towers, large stones and the like. The largest cave system is Bobacka (2221 m long volcanic cave with siphons, underground lakes and stalactite-stalagmite). Muránska planina is also a thick forest of pine and beech dominant on limestone soil. On the rocky soil are the pine and spruce. We grow more than 90 plant species. Of the animals are bears, wolves, lynxes, wildcats, otters, golden eagles, saker, owls and other bird species. The caves are several species of bats. A peculiarity of Muránska planina is the breeding of the Slovak horse type, namely the mountain horse for difficult areas. This species is a cross Hucul and Nordic horse. Across the National Park leads a cog railway, which connects regions Pohronie and Gemer (Brezno - Tisovec - Hnúšta). About the important role of the region in the past witnesses the ruins of the castle Muran, which consisted of 27 parts and the ruins of the castle in Prednej Hora. This park is located to the southeast of the High Tatras in the northeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains.
